1. Development of object-modelling techniques for low-latency perception from event cameras
The internship will be carried out in the in the Event-Driven Perception for Robotics group, coordinated by Chiara Bartolozzi in the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (Genoa, Italy).

General description: Event cameras provide ultra-fast, low-power vision, making them ideal for robotics. However, most AI-based 3D modelling methods—such as NeRFs and Gaussian Splatting—are designed for standard cameras and cannot directly use event data. This forces current systems to rely on additional sensors and inefficient representations. In this project, you will help bridge this gap by developing object-modelling techniques directly from event cameras, enabling end-to-end, low-latency perception. During the project, you will learn how to:
- Understand the principles behind event cameras and their unique data format
- Work with state-of-the-art AI-based 3D modelling techniques, including Gaussian Splatting
- Design and implement event-based object representations
- Integrate perception algorithms with robotic tasks such as detection, tracking, and grasping in highly dynamical scenarios
This project offers hands-on experience in event-based vision, 3D reconstruction, and robotics, and is ideal for students interested in cutting-edge sensing and perception technologies.

2. Neuromorphic tactile perception in robot using neural spiking encoding schemes and self-supervised learning methods
The internship will be carried out in the in the Event-Driven Perception for Robotics group, coordinated by Chiara Bartolozzi in the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (Genoa, Italy).

General description: Robots are more than just artificial intelligence as they can physically interact with the world to perform useful tasks. Humans greatly rely on tactile perception when they are grasping, manipulating or using tools, but robotic tactile perception is far behind biological capability. Taking inspiration from biology, neuromorphic tactile perception aims to bridge the gap using neural spiking encoding schemes and self-supervised learning methods. We are looking for a motivated student to process tactile and proprioception data taken from a robot performing a painting task to extract features and perform brush stroke recognition using spiking neural network methods. The project aims to both boost the tactile capability of the robot and provide insight into functionality of skin receptors and organization in biology.
